Yesterday is really completely different from today especially in the aspect of having plastic molded parts. An individual can never really have his or her desired custom plastic parts without going to a plastic part manufacturer and paying big bucks. But to the advancement of the technology nowadays, there are already several materials that can help you in producing plastic molded parts even in the comfort of your home. The great thing about this is that it just requires small investment. The plastic molded parts are just as high in quality as the parts created by manufacturing plants. The only difference lies in the ease of the plastic molding process.

Creating Your First Plastic Molded Parts

If this is your first time to create your very first plastic mold masterpiece, then you have got lots of work to do. Before you begin doing something, you should prepare the needed materials first. Bear in mind that you can never start in number 2 if you will not begin in number 1. The following are the things you need in order to create high quality plastic molded parts: mixing sticks, disposable mixing cups, rubber gloves, brush, release agent, liquid plastic compound, aerosol acrylic enamel, scissors, hot glue, disposable container or cardboard and silicone molding compound.

Use a glue gun in order for your desired object or figure to be molded to be attached on a flat surface. This is very important to assure that your plastic molded parts will be flawless when they are already finished.

The bottom of a plastic container should also be cut and set down over the figure. If it comes in a unique or unusual shape or size, a cardboard strip should be used instead. You should also leave a room measuring½-1 inch between the container wall and the object. When the object is already positioned appropriately, you should have the container glued to the working surface. This is a way of securing that the silicone will not leak out.

After that, acrylic enamel coats should be sprayed to the object. The silicone should also be mixed in a mixing cup in accordance with its directions. Bear in mind that it is very important to follow instructions because this will secure that your finished output is desirable and satisfactory.

When you are done, the next thing to do is to carefully pour the silicone into the container and let it cover the object you are molding. The reason why you should do the pouring slowly but surely is to prevent tiny air bubbles from breaking. Another thing to remember is to fill your container to a half inch above the object’s highest point.

Just let the silicone cure. When you are done, you can already move on to the second part which involves production of the plastic molded parts that you desire. The first step is removing the cardboard or plastic container. Next, you have to clean the mold in order for the residues left to be removed. Who would want to see residues? They make the finish product so unbecoming. A moderate mold coat should also be sprayed or brushed into the mold. Just let it dry in order to be satisfied with the results.

Just like what you did in the first part, you need to remix the liquid plastic. Following the directions is very important to secure that you will get the results that you are expecting. Be strict with yourself because even a single mistake can bring about an undesirable output.

When you are done in the mixing process, the mixed liquid plastic should be poured into the mold at the lowest possible point. Let it completely fill the mold. The last step is to have the plastic part removed from the mold once it has already hardened. Make as many plastic molded parts as you wish. See? The process is just so easy and convenient.

Restoring the Look of Old Plastic Molded Parts

What is great with plastic molding because you cannot just create new plastic parts but restore them as well. If you have old plastic parts at home, you can restore their look by simply adding layers of lively colors to them using a plastic spray paint. A plastic spray paint sticks with the plastic, and the good thing is that it lasts for years. Are you now ready for another plastic molding/painting experiment? Then read the succeeding paragraphs.

The following are the things you need for this project: spray paint, masking tape, painting clothes, newspapers or drop cloth, tack cloth, fine sandpaper, paint thinner, shop cloths and ammonia cleaner.

The first step is to wipe the old plastic molded parts using ammonia cleaner in order for the grime and dust to be removed. The new ones should be wiped down using a paint thinner and just let them dry. The surfaces that were previously painted should also be sand with fine sandpaper. After that, remove the debris with an air canister and tack cloth.

A well-ventilated or not windy place should also be selected in order for the newspapers to be spread out well. Lay all the pieces out. Make sure that they are 6 inches from each other so that you will be able to easily spray them from various angles. If you don’t want the entire process to be messy, put your painting clothes on

Apply masking tape to any areas of the plastic molded parts that you don’t want to be painted. The spray paint can should also be shaken well for a minimum of two minutes. Adjust the can’s nozzle to spray from all angles. After that, you can already apply an even coat. Before you apply the next coat, you have to wait for 30 seconds.

Lastly, the plastic molded parts should be moved to a well-ventilated area. Wait for a minimum of one week before utilizing the plastic parts. This is the long process on how to create your very own plastic molded parts at home. See? You can do it all by yourself.
